Remembering Major Durga Malla: Why Darjeeling Still Honors Its First Gorkha Martyr in 2026

On August 25, 1944, Major Durga Malla was hanged in Delhi Central Jail. He was 31. His last words, spoken in Nepali, were reportedly: "I am sacrificing my life for the freedom of my country."

Eighty-two years later, in 2026, his statue in Darjeeling still gets fresh marigolds every morning. Not from politicians — from schoolchildren.

Born on July 1, 1913, in Doiwala, Dehradun, Durga Malla was the eldest son of Jamadar Ganga Ram Malla of the Gorkha Rifles. He joined the British Indian Army, then in 1942, he joined Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose's Indian National Army. He was caught, tried for treason, and executed.

In 2026, the story feels more urgent than ever.

I met 16-year-old Rohan Pradhan at the memorial near Chowrasta last week. He walks 12 km daily from Toongsoong to school. "Sir, we learn about Bhagat Singh in textbooks," he said, "but Durga Malla was ours. Gorkha. Why isn't he in chapter one?"

That question is why we are telling his story again now.

In 2026, three things make his legacy live:

1. The Indian Army now has its first ethnic Gorkha Lt General — Shakti Gurung, commissioned into the Grenadiers. Durga Malla's sacrifice for an inclusive army feels prophetic.

3. His family still lives in the Hills. His grand-niece, now a teacher in Kurseong, keeps his letters in a tin box. She showed me one line: "Desh bhanda thulo kehi chaina." Nothing is bigger than the nation.

In Darjeeling today, Durga Malla is not just history — he is an argument, a pride, a question.

Every year on his martyrdom day, the Gorkha ex-servicemen gather. No big speeches, no cameras from far away. Just a khada, a salute, and schoolchildren reciting his name.

This year, we asked students: what does Durga Malla mean to you? Answers were not about 1944. They were about 2026 jobs, about being called names in Indian cities, about wanting to serve without having to explain their surname.

"Hamro itihas, hamro pahichan," said a Class 10 girl. Our history, our identity.

That is why Darjeeling still honors him. Not because he died, but because his question — what does it mean to be both Gorkha and Indian — is still unanswered.
