Redrawing the Canvas: From Blue and White to Saffron and Green

The year 2026 marked a major shift in West Bengal politics as BJP won a landslide victory ending 15 years of TMC rule. As the implications of this recent victory continues to unfold, my focus remains firmly on the vision and expectations of the people belonging in and around the ‘Queen of the Hills’.

This election for Indian Gorkha’s was a lot more than just a right we exercise living in a functioning democracy. It carried hopes, dreams, aspirations of the community; who has been neglected for a very long time. Every last person here dreamt and still dreams the same dream, which is having a land of their own, a place to call home, to be able to honour every sacrifice made for the same dream in that very land we dearly call ‘Gorkhaland’ .Thus, before casting vote every generation must have thought something in a similar line ‘maybe this time I don't need to go far from home in search of better education and job’ ‘maybe this time I don't have to go far to receive good health care treatment’. The pillars of our hill’s economy, tea garden workers must have thought ‘maybe this time we will be paid according to our labor’. Above all, the people living in and around the hills must have hoped for transformation, not vague promises but substantive changes like investment in infrastructure development, sensible traffic regulation, and robust systems for managing our water and waste. As ensuring a sustainable future for the region isn’t just a preference for the community but an absolute necessity.

Pardon my oversight, for I may have missed some other critical aspects, but I believe that it isn't viable nor possible to sum up dreams and aspirations which people have been carrying for so long in this short passage. However, what I have attempted is to bring a gist of whatever fell within my sight. Last but not the least, though the future holds uncertainty and ‘Gorkhaland' feels like a distant dream, I often think about how we never stopped dreaming.

The shared dream that began with the very first call for Gorkhaland is what keeps us going. Beyond the noise of politics and elections, it’s our collective courage and hope for a better future that holds us together.
