Online Backlash Over Gorkhaland Poster Exposes Raw Nerves Between Hills and Plains
A viral Instagram post shows how far apart hill and plains communities remain — even as the Centre's new committee begins its work
A day after the Union Home Ministry reconfirmed its committee to seek a "permanent political solution" to the Gorkha statehood demand, a social media post laid bare how contested that solution still is on the ground — not in the hills alone, but in the plains areas any future Gorkhaland state would have to include.
On August 23, an Instagram page dedicated to the Gorkhaland cause posted a graphic combining a proposed state map with population figures. Within a day it had drawn hundreds of likes and dozens of comments — and the comment section quickly became a proxy fight over the same question that has stalled the Gorkhaland demand for decades: who has a rightful claim to Siliguri, Jalpaiguri, and Alipurduar, the plains districts that sit between the hills and the rest of West Bengal.
A dispute over numbers nobody agreed on
Much of the argument centered on demographics — which population figures were accurate, whose historical presence in the plains counted as "indigenous," and which century's census data should settle the matter. Commenters cited, and disputed, figures ranging from an 1881 British-era census to the 2011 Census of India, with each side accusing the other of using selectively cropped or fabricated data. None of the figures exchanged in the comments were independently verifiable in that format, and KhabarDarjeeling has not been able to confirm any of them against official Census of India records — a reminder that screenshots circulating in a comment thread are not a substitute for primary source data, whichever side of the debate one is on.
From disagreement to hostility
The tone escalated well beyond a numbers dispute. Several comments dismissed Gorkha claims to the plains as illegitimate on historical grounds, framing Nepali-origin communities in the region as recent arrivals brought in for colonial-era tea plantation labor rather than as long-settled residents. Others responded by pointing to that same labor history — and to Gorkha soldiers' role in India's independence movement and wars — as grounds for the community's claim to dignity and recognition, not against it. At least one comment crossed from disagreement into an explicit threat of violence over the map itself, and several others used language telling Gorkha and Nepali-origin commenters to "go back" to the hills or to Nepal.
One commenter, pushing back on the hostility, put it directly: the community's labor and sacrifice have long been relied upon while the same voices telling them to leave use words like "immigrant" — and argued that treatment is precisely why the demand for recognition persists. Another comment took a more measured line altogether, questioning whether statehood alone would fix the practical problems facing Darjeeling, and suggesting a Union Territory status for the wider North Bengal region as a possible alternative to full statehood — a reminder that opinion inside the Gorkhaland-supporting camp is not uniform either.
Why this matters beyond one Instagram post
Viral arguments in a comment section are not policy, and nothing here reflects the official position of any political party, the GTA, or the committee announced on August 22. But the exchange is a useful, uncomfortable data point for anyone following the renewed talks: the plains districts at the center of decades of Gorkhaland negotiations remain a genuine flashpoint, not a settled boundary question, and sentiment on the ground — on both sides — runs considerably hotter than the language of "constitutional solution" and "political dialogue" coming out of Delhi suggests.
Given the volume of contested and unverifiable claims involved, and the presence of hostile and threatening language directed at ordinary social media users, KhabarDarjeeling is not naming or linking to the individual accounts involved in this exchange. The pattern, not any single commenter, is the story.
KhabarDarjeeling will continue tracking how the Centre's committee engages with the Terai and Dooars — the plains regions at the heart of this dispute — as talks proceed.
