Monsoon Brings Fresh Landslide Fear Above Loreto Convent School

With the onset of monsoon, the recurring landslide above Loreto Convent School has once again triggered anxiety among local residents, with many homes standing in a precarious condition and no visible long-term remedial action from the district administration or Darjeeling Municipality.

The slope above the school area has reportedly been slipping every monsoon for years, yet residents say the problem remains unresolved. Locals fear that the repeated slides could worsen if proper drainage, retaining structures, and slope stabilization measures are not taken immediately.

The stretch is particularly sensitive as it is used daily by hundreds of school children from Loreto Convent School, St. Teresa’s and St. Robert’s, making the road a major safety concern during the rainy season.

Residents have expressed concern that even small rains are enough to loosen the hillside, sending mud and debris onto the road and leaving nearby houses at risk. The situation has renewed calls for urgent intervention before the area faces a bigger disaster.
