Darjeeling is known across the world for its breathtaking landscapes, lush tea gardens, the iconic Toy Train, and the majestic Kanchenjunga. Every year, thousands of tourists visit the hill town, making tourism one of its biggest strengths. But with growing tourism and urbanisation comes a challenge that affects everyone: waste management.

Plastic bottles, food wrappers, overflowing dustbins, and roadside litter have become common sights in many parts of the town. Besides affecting Darjeeling's beauty, unmanaged waste pollutes water sources, blocks drains, harms the fragile Himalayan environment, and damages the town's image as a tourist destination.

Recognising the need for cleaner surroundings, the Darjeeling Municipality has introduced several measures to improve waste management across the town.

Steps Taken by the Darjeeling Municipality

Spot fines for littering, illegal dumping, spitting, public urination, and violations of plastic waste rules.

Door-to-door waste collection to ensure regular collection of household and commercial waste.

Fixed garbage disposal timings to prevent waste from being left on streets throughout the day.

Digital collection of fines to improve transparency and accountability.

Promotion of waste segregation by encouraging households to separate biodegradable and non-biodegradable waste.

Cleanliness awareness campaigns in schools, markets, and local communities.

Restrictions on single-use plastics to reduce plastic pollution and encourage eco-friendly alternatives.

These efforts show the Municipality's commitment to making Darjeeling cleaner. But keeping the town clean cannot be achieved by municipal workers alone.

Every plastic bottle thrown from a vehicle, every wrapper left on the roadside, and every bag of waste dumped in the wrong place adds to the problem. Likewise, every person who uses a dustbin, avoids single-use plastic, and follows waste disposal rules becomes part of the solution.

A clean Darjeeling is not just the responsibility of the Municipality. It is a shared responsibility between the administration, residents, businesses, and tourists.

The Municipality has taken important steps. The question now is: Are we doing our part?
