Darjeeling NGO Brings Two Stranded Youths Home From Dubai After 18-Day Rescue Effort

Two young men from North Bengal are back home with their families after an 18-day rescue effort by Darjeeling-based non-profit Darjeeling Maato Ko Maya Seva Sanstha, according to the organisation, which coordinated their return from Dubai involving medical assistance, legal follow-up, and repatriation arrangements.

The two cases

According to the organisation, its General Secretary Praveen Shah Shankar travelled to Dubai on August 29 to assist the two men, both of whom were facing serious difficulties and unable to return home without outside support.

The first case involved Adarsh Baraily, a resident of Kalimpong. His mother, Kavita Baraily, had reportedly approached the organisation after losing contact with her son and sought help bringing him home. The organisation said Adarsh was located and handed over to its team on August 30 with assistance from contacts in Dubai.

The second involved Wang Tshering Bhutia, a resident of Ghoom, who had suffered an accident and sustained a leg fracture. The organisation said he had no adequate financial resources, medical insurance, or caregiver to support his treatment, and that arrangements — including surgery — were made with support from its Dubai team.

How the operation came together

Both cases, according to the organisation, required sustained coordination between people on the ground in Dubai, medical assistance, legal procedures, and repatriation arrangements. Its Dubai branch coordinator, Kegen Moktan, was acknowledged by the organisation for providing local support throughout.

After the necessary procedures were completed, both men were flown back to India and received at Bagdogra Airport by members of Darjeeling Maato Ko Maya Seva Sanstha and their families.

Rescue is not only about bringing someone home; it is also about restoring hope to families waiting for their loved ones.

Part of a wider pattern of work

The organisation says the Dubai operation is part of a broader effort to assist people from the region facing difficulties abroad — including migrant workers, medical emergencies, and repatriation cases. It also pointed to an earlier case in May, when its Israel branch reportedly intervened after Dipesh Rai was stranded at an Israeli airport for eight days; Shah Shankar is said to have met him on arrival in Delhi and accompanied him to Bagdogra.

Darjeeling Maato Ko Maya Seva Sanstha says it remains committed to helping people from the region who face emergencies while working or living abroad.
