Darjeeling Faces Rain Disruption and Political Reset as BGPM Steps Back From GTA

Darjeeling is going through a difficult phase marked by two parallel developments: destructive monsoon rain and a major political shift inside the hills. On one side, heavy rainfall on June 18–19, 2026 washed away a temporary bridge over the Balason River and triggered landslides that disrupted key road links between Siliguri, Mirik, Kurseong, and Darjeeling. On the other side, BGPM leader Anit Thapa has resigned as chief executive of the Gorkhaland Territorial Administration, adding fresh uncertainty to hill politics.

The rain damage has once again exposed the fragility of hill infrastructure in Darjeeling district. Officials said the makeshift bridge near Dudhia was swept away after a sudden rise in the Balason River, while a landslide at Mahanadi blocked the road and left commuters, tourists, and local residents stranded. The disruption came even as the government is still working on a permanent bridge project over the river, showing how vulnerable the region remains during the monsoon.

The impact on everyday life has been immediate. Travel movement has slowed down, road access has been cut in several stretches, and people living in the hills are once again dealing with the fear and uncertainty that come with each intense spell of rain. In a region where tourism, transport, and small businesses are closely tied to road connectivity, even a short closure can affect livelihoods and daily survival.

At the same time, hill politics is also undergoing a shift. BGPM’s central executive committee met in Kurseong and welcomed the party’s exit from the GTA administration, while also deciding to give priority to ethnic issues and strengthen the organisation. Anit Thapa’s resignation has been widely seen as an admission of political pressure after recent electoral setbacks, and it has reopened debate over the future role of the GTA in Darjeeling’s governance.

This makes the current situation in Darjeeling more than a weather story or a political headline. The district is facing a double strain: natural pressure from repeated monsoon damage and institutional pressure from a changing political order. When roads collapse and leadership shifts at the same time, the uncertainty spreads quickly through the hills, affecting both administration and public confidence.

For the people of Darjeeling, the bigger question is not only how long the rain will last, but also who will take responsibility for rebuilding trust, roads, and governance in a region that seems to be under constant pressure. Until stronger planning and clearer political direction emerge, the hills are likely to keep living through this cycle of disruption and adjustment
