Darjeeling Deserves Better

Every morning, thousands of people step out of their homes with the same hope: to reach work, school, college, or the market safely. But in Darjeeling, even a short journey can feel like an obstacle course.

We have learned to slow down before every pothole. We know which roads flood after a few hours of rain. We know which broken stretches to avoid, because we've lived with them for years.

Some roads are repaired just enough to last a few weeks. Then the rain returns, the surface breaks again, and life goes on as if this has become normal.

But it shouldn't be normal.

Darjeeling is known around the world for its beauty. Tourists come here to admire the mountains, ride the toy train, and breathe the fresh air. Yet the people who call these hills home often struggle with roads that make daily life harder instead of easier.

There is another silence we rarely talk about.

Our graveyards.

These are places where we visit the people we have loved and lost. They should offer peace, dignity, and respect. Instead, in some places, overgrown grass, broken paths, scattered waste, and a lack of regular maintenance leave families disappointed and heartbroken. The final resting place of our loved ones deserves care, not neglect.

This is not about blaming one person or one department.

It is about asking a simple question:

If Darjeeling can welcome the world, why can't it provide better care for the people who live here every day?

The people of Darjeeling are patient. We adjust. We wait. We hope. But hope alone cannot fill potholes, prevent landslides, or restore neglected public spaces.

Our town deserves roads that are safe, public spaces that are clean, and places of remembrance that are treated with dignity.

Darjeeling is more than a tourist destination.

It is our home.

And every home deserves care.
