Sikkim Woman Rescued From Alleged Abuse in Singapore, Now Safe in Delhi

Munna Gurung, a Sikkim resident who was working in Singapore, is now safely in Delhi after an NGO's rescue effort following a public appeal for help, according to Darjeeling Maato Ko Maya Seva Sanstha, the organisation that coordinated her return.

What she says happened

According to Gurung, she had previously worked in Singapore for six years before returning to India, and had gone back recently to take up new employment. She alleges that serious problems began within just two days of starting the new job.

In a video she shared publicly, Gurung alleged that she was made to work from early morning until around 11:30 p.m. or midnight, and that she faced verbal abuse and mental pressure from her employer. She said she was threatened with accusations of theft if she touched her own belongings, and warned that she could be blacklisted and sent back to India.

She also described difficulty accessing a mobile network, saying she had to rely on Wi-Fi even to speak with her family, and raised concerns about food and her own safety. Separately, she alleged that she witnessed a child in the household being physically assaulted.

These allegations rest solely on Gurung's own account in the video she posted; they have not been independently verified.

In the video, she appealed for help returning to India, saying she was willing to work anywhere — Delhi, Mumbai, or Bengaluru — and that she did not have enough money to buy a return ticket herself.

How the rescue came together

Gurung's video reached the Singapore branch of Darjeeling Maato Ko Maya Seva Sanstha, whose members contacted her directly to understand her situation. The organisation says the rescue was coordinated under Singapore Branch President Nirmala Gurung, with support from Singapore branch members and the organisation's Central Committee.

The timing carried extra weight for the organisation: September 20, the day of the rescue, also happened to be the Singapore branch's annual anniversary. Rekha Tamang, Alisa Rai, and Binita Tamang accompanied Gurung to the airport, and the organisation says the High Commission of India assisted in getting her home safely.

What happens now

At Delhi airport, Subina Shashankar and Sumesh Gurung of the organisation's Delhi branch received Gurung. The Delhi branch says it has taken responsibility for her accommodation, food, and support during her stay, and — since she has said she wants to work in India — plans to help connect her with employment so she can become self-reliant.

The organisation says its work doesn't stop at rescue: the broader goal is helping people who've been pulled out of difficult situations abroad rebuild their lives through steady work and independence.
