Bakhkhor Soil Cracks as Dry Spell Hits Tukar Valley

The Bakhkhor area of Tukar Valley is showing clear signs of severe dryness, with the soil cracked wide open after an extended dry spell. The land, once suitable for cultivation, now looks parched and fragile.

The attached image shows deep fissures across the ground, with only a few patches of grass still surviving. Such cracking usually happens when moisture in the soil drops sharply over time, especially in clay-heavy ground.

Weather reports and climate outlooks have warned of hotter-than-normal conditions across India’s hill regions this year, including the Himalayan belt. Darjeeling’s recent weather also shows a strong contrast between short rain spells and dry, stressed ground conditions.

The dry spell has raised concerns among farmers and local residents, especially in areas dependent on rainfall for खेती and daily water needs. Similar dry conditions have already affected Darjeeling’s tea-growing belt, where prolonged rainfall deficits have worried planters.
