A Story of Love, Loss, and the Timeless Hills of Darjeeling

The morning mist in Darjeeling didn’t just rise; it woke up like an old friend, slow and familiar.

For seventy-year-old Samar, that mist was the backdrop of a lifetime. Every morning for the past forty years, he stood on the wooden balcony of his heritage cottage on Observatory Hill, a steaming cup of Muscatel orthodox black tea cupped between his wrinkled palms.

But this morning was different. The chair next to him was empty. His wife, Maya, had passed away six months ago, taking the warmth of the house with her. The sprawling views of the Kanchenjunga range, usually a source of quiet awe, felt distant and cold.

Samar looked down at the ticket in his hand. It was for the 10:00 AM Toy Train from Darjeeling to Ghum. Maya had made him promise, in her final weeks, that he wouldn’t stop taking their annual anniversary ride. “The mountains don’t forget love, Samar,” she had whispered. “Go remind them.”

With a heavy heart and a woolen shawl wrapped tight around his shoulders, Samar walked down the steep, winding path toward the Darjeeling Railway Station.

The Sound of Iron and Steam

The station was alive with the familiar chaos of the hills. The iconic blue steam engine, a living relic of the 19th century, hissed and wheezed, breathing out thick plumes of white smoke that blended into the mountain air.

Samar climbed into the wooden coach and took his seat by the window.

As the whistle blew—a sharp, nostalgic shriek—the train began its slow, rhythmic crawl. It chugged along Hill Cart Road, so close to the local shops that Samar could reach out and touch the colorful woolens hanging in the doorways. Shopkeepers waved, and school children in neat uniforms laughed, racing the train and winning easily.

For the first mile, Samar only felt the ache of Maya’s absence. He remembered how she used to lean her head on his shoulder, her hair smelling of jasmine oil and mountain rain.

The Batasia Loop

Then, the train approached the Batasia Loop, the magnificent spiral railway where the track wraps around itself to handle the steep gradient.

As the train slowly curved around the lush green manicured gardens, the clouds suddenly parted. It was as if a curtain had been pulled back on a grand stage. There, towering over the horizon in impossible, blinding majesty, was Mount Kanchenjunga. Its snow-capped peaks were bathed in a soft, golden morning light.

A collective gasp went up from the tourists in the carriage. But Samar just stared.

Right there, at the edge of the loop, stood a young couple. The man was clumsily trying to wrap a red shawl around the woman’s shoulders against the sudden chilly draft, making her laugh. It was a mirror of fifty years ago.

In that sharp, beautiful moment, Samar didn’t feel a pang of grief. Instead, a profound warmth washed over him. He realized Maya hadn't left him behind; she had left herself embedded in the very fabric of this place. She was in the crispness of the air, the golden light on the peaks, and the timeless rhythm of the toy train.

A Cup of Comfort at Ghum

The train finally hissed to a halt at Ghum, the highest railway station in India. Samar stepped off the train, his steps lighter than they had been in months.

He walked over to a small, weathered tea stall run by an old woman he had known for decades.

"The usual, Samar-da?" she asked, her eyes crinkling with silent understanding.

"The usual, Pema," Samar smiled, a genuine one this time.

He sat on a wooden bench, holding a hot glass of spiced chai, watching the fog gently roll back over the tracks. He looked up at the mountains, silent and eternal.

Darjeeling hadn't cured his sorrow, but it had held it for him, wrapping it in mist and tea leaves, reminding him that some loves, just like the hills, never fade away.
